Lee County Area Technology Center

Lee County ATC welding student Maggie Johnson competed in a welding competition on January 19th, 2023, at the 502 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union in Louisville. Out of 45 contestants, she placed first on the Seniors only project, which included 4 hours and 30 minutes of stick welding, tig welding, and oxy-fuel cutting. As a reward for her outstanding welding, she was given a Lincoln Electric care package that included a welding jacket, helmet, glove, and some hand tools. This competition has been heavily publicized and you have likely seen Maggie on your TV. All of us at the ATC are so proud of her!

As a promotional project, we decided to create cut-outs of each program so that when younger students visit the school, they can see themselves in various careers. Clara Bishop took charge of this project and saw it from start to completion. Clara is a senior at Lee County High School and has taken business classes at the ATC since her sophomore year. She has completed many projects for teacher and FBLA advisor Rachel Miller. Clara made these cutouts with the help of several programs at the ATC including Carpentry, who cut the face holes and primed the wood. Clara loves being at the ATC because of hands-on activities and having a chance to participate in so much. Making the cutouts was an extensive process because we had to not only find inspiration for pictures but also have students dress in gear for their program to trace. We then had to outline the board using a projector and paint the figures. Thank you for your hard work, Clara!

These students are a part of Mr. Hills Welding Program and traveled to FCCTC on December 9th, 2022 to compete in an invitational event. This competition was seniors only and had over 100 competitors including some from out of state. The team placed 2nd and Peyton Gabbard placed 4th Individually. All students from Lee County ATC received a $500 Scholarship for Tulsa Welding School.

Pictured is Jackie Roberts and John Linkous in the Automotive Technology program at the Lee county ATC. Jackie and John were both selected to be part of the Boyd Caterpillar Company diesel Training program. Jackie and John are both Wolfe Co. high students who travel over the ATC and have been in the automotive program 2 years. The Caterpillar program is a 2 year internship where the students will be trained on Caterpillar equipment as well as attending college to finish with a degree. Both students travelled to Pikeville Friday ,Feb 3rd to complete a Mechanical aptitude exam and will travel on March 23rd to Peoria, Illinois to tour the training center where much of their training will occur. This is not the first time Auto students have launched into the diesel repair industry from Lee county, we've had several from the past. Mr. Lucas worked for the Caterpillar company when it was owned by the Whayne family under the name Whayne Supply . We are proud to say the least and Mr. Lucas and the staff congratulate both young men and wish them the best of luck.

Mrs. Kelley's Body Structures and Function class have been learning about the skeletal system and as part of their lesson they created live size skeletons complete with labeling the large bones.

Students in Mrs. Miller's Digital Literacy have been learning Excel since coming back from Christmas break. The first assignment they completed was pixel art, where students made artwork by coloring individual cells in the program. Aubri Perkins, pictured here with her work, used pixels to recreate Michelangelo's David. We just had to brag on her for how incredible this turned out.

High School Senior Dalton Little recently visited Local Union No. 502 to take tests and schedule an interview for a job. Dalton will go to a seven week training in Louisville then proceed to do night classes for the next year. Dalton will only be a one year apprentice for a short time thanks to his knowledge from the Lee County ATC. Way to go, Dalton!

Welcome Mrs. Kelley to Lee County ATC! Mrs. Kelley has 27 years combined experience as a Registered Nurse in home health and long term care. Her and her husband Roy have 1 daughter, Edith, and reside in Wolfe County. She is very excited to begin her career as a Health Science Instructor and assisting students in becoming career ready. Mrs. Kelley is Graduate of Owsley County High School. She attended Lees College and completed an Associated Degree of Science in Nursing, practiced as a nurse for 24 years in home health and 3 years in long term care, and currently resides in Wolfe County.

Amber Flinchum, senior health science student, recently completed her 6 week co-op with Mercy Health Clinic. Amber is very grateful for everyone that help make this such a wonderful learning experience and this has strengthened her desire to continue her education in health care. Students from SKILLS USA, HOSA, and FBLA participated in making goodie bags full of candy for the Middle KY Headstart students. Today, we had a small group represent our clubs and participated in a trick-or-treat there. We hope to see those students in our classrooms in 10 years.

The Carpentry, Welding, and Electricity programs here at Lee County ATC recently attended the Shelbyville Career Fair. During this event students were able to meet with different companies, tried our various pieces of equipment, and gained knowledge of their career options.

Mr. Thacker's Electricity program appreciates the generous donation from Elliot. Among the donations were 300 sticks of 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch conduit, boxes and boxes of connectors, device boxes, various fire alarm systems, and much more not pictured. Lee County ATC is thankful for their help, and looks forward to working with them more in the future to build great technicians for tomorrow's workforce!

Mr. Hill's welding students are learning how to use a plasma cutter.

Mrs. Miller's Financial Literacy course is learning about college tuition prices. Students are researching the net price of various colleges around the state and country.

Carpentry students are working on the tiny house this week and practicing their skills with the circular saw.

This week Mr. Thacker's Electrical Technology students are learning how to wire sockets.

Students at the Lee County ATC in Automotive Technology have been working on fuel injections and other various projects for the past week.

Student Showcase has been scheduled for November 15th from 5-7 PM here at the Lee County ATC. We hope you make plans to attend.

On the last day of school, John Allen and Tyler Phillips presented Stop the Bleed to the health science students. Student learned about using a tourniquet, packing bleeds, and compression with hands on practice.
