About Mr. Lucas
A proud Breathitt County native, Mr. John Lucas is in his 26th year of teaching Automotive at the Lee County Area Technology Center. As a student, he attended the Breathitt County ATC’s automotive program, which first sparked his passion for the field.
Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Lucas worked in heavy machinery for several companies, including Caterpillar. He holds multiple professional certifications, including Master ASE in Automotive and Master ASE in Heavy-Duty Machinery. He also earned an Associate of Applied Science from Eastern Kentucky University and a Master’s degree from Nashville Auto Diesel College.
Mr. Lucas says he “fell into” teaching but now finds great fulfillment in working with students and helping them grow. He leads SkillsUSA Auto, introducing students to competition, and especially enjoys teaching automotive electricity—diagnostics, computers, remote start, and starters—because of the challenge.
Outside of the classroom, Mr. Lucas is working toward a degree in Biblical Studies at Kentucky Mountain Bible College. He is an ordained pastor, serving as an associate pastor at Elkatawa Free Methodist in Jackson.
He and his wife, Hope, have two sons, Jesse and Jacob. In his spare time, he enjoys restoring old cars, playing guitar, and spending time with his family.
