The Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative (KVEC) is a regional educational support agency serving south east Kentucky School Districts since 1969.  The Cooperative is made up of twenty-two public school districts and provides service in the areas of Special Education, Adult Education, Safe Schools, Literacy, Bidding and Procurement, Mathematics, Curriculum and Instruction, and Leadership Development.  Lee County Public Schools are a founding member of the Cooperative and have helped to lead the Cooperative's initiatives and direction during the past forty years.

During the Cooperative's regular May Board Meeting, the Cooperative Board unanimously elected Mr. James Evans, Jr., to serve as the Board's Vice Chair during the upcoming School Year (2010-2011).  As Vice Chair for the organization, Mr. Evans will be a member of the Executive Committee and will assume the role as Chairman of the Board during the 2011-2012 School Year.  Along with his role as Vice Chair and Chair for the KVEC Board, Mr. Evans will also represent the region on the Kentucky Department of Education's Commissioner's Advisory Council for a two-year term beginning on July 1, 2011.  As a member of the Commissioner's Advisory Council, Mr. Evans will meet with the Commissioner of Education during monthly sessions intended to provide information and feedback on Department acitivities and help to enhance the service provided to Kentucky students.

Kentucky's Commissioner of Education, Dr. Terry Holliday, was in attendance at the May KVEC Board Meeting and expressed his perception that Mr. Evans appointment would enable the Cooperative to continue it's long-standing focus on students and educational excellence in the region.  Mr. Jeff Hawkins, KVEC's Executive Director, said "KVEC is blessed to have an outstanding group of Board Members who consistently put students first in their conversation and their actions.  I look forward to working with Mr. Evans as we collectively work to overcome the challenges before us and provide the best possible services for our students and staff."
